From City (Munich) to Forest (Bavarian)

FAR away on the other side of Germany, I imagined, travelers might be sampling the famous chocolate cakes and smoked hams of the well-traveled Black Forest. But here in the more remote and lesser-known Bayerischer Wald, or Bavarian Forest, the local delicacy arrived in a bottle: a clear, pale gold liqueur called Bärwurz, distilled from the unusual herbs that grow in this dense, hilly woodland along the German border with the Czech Republic.
